Filming in Cuba: Images from Universal’s Fast 8

As Fast and Furious 8 finished up filming in Cuba in April, a small team from the next iteration of Transformers arrived to complete a much smaller scale shoot in the island nation.

In a public statement, the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry (ICAIC) said it would be providing, “new cinematographic services for the foreign production,” of Transformers 5.

A team filming the comedy series House of Lies was the first to profit from new US regulations that grants greater flexibility for US film productions to shoot in Cuba. This company sees a huge future for Cuba’s film and broadcasting industry.

Prior to the current wave of filming interest, one Hollywood production managed to film in Cuba as early as 2014 – the first to do so since the Castro-led revolution of 1959. The team filming Papa, an independent biopic on the American writer Ernest Hemingway, was able to obtain a license from the Treasury Department to film on the island from April to May 2014.

Cuba is also home to nine UNESCO World Heritage sites. These include: Cultural – Archaeological Landscape of the First Coffee Plantations in the South-East of Cuba – Historic Centre of Camagüey – Old Havana and its Fortifications – San Pedro de la Roca Castle – Trinidad and the Valley de los Ingenios – Urban Historic Centre of Cienfuegos – Viñales Valley – NATURE – Alejando de Humboldt National Park – Desembarco del Granma National Park – TENTATIVE LIST – National Schools of Art – Ciénaga de Zapata National Park – Reef System in the Cuban Caribbean.
