According to Martín Proenza, the founder of the web-based taxi platform, YoTeLlevo, your taxi driver makes the difference in Cuba.

With a surge in travelers to Cuba in recent years, it’s become more important to arrange transportation.  But for travelers, getting around Havana’s 281 square miles can be a challenge as public transportation is limited or non-existent.

According to Brendan Sainsbury, a Cuba expert for travel guide Lonely Planet, Cuba is the travel destination of the year. Sainsbury calls Havana, “one of the world’s great cities.” Indeed, whether it’s day or night, Havana offers amazing experiences and a real sense of time travel to previous eras.

One option for getting around is to jump into the taxi mix at the airport. A better alternative is to arrange for a taxi to meet you and have the relief of knowing a reliable taxi is waiting for you at a pre-negotiated price and with a driver whose name and car you already know about.

Here’s how to use YoTeLlevo.

Sign up and send your basic travel information (in English or Spanish). Within a day, you will have offers from drivers.

You can use YoTeLlevo to arrange a taxi from the airport to your hotel, for all-day tours or for long distance journeys around the island nation. Payments are made in cash when you meet your driver.

The site allows users to leave reviews. Here are the reviews for Roberto de la Cruz.

Proenza tells the Cuba Journal he built the taxi platform to address the challenges travelers encounter in Cuba. He stresses the importance of the driver and the car and, of course, being able to use the service in English or Spanish.
