She’s been leading the recently-launched talks between the United States and Cuba for just a few months, but now Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs of State Roberta Jacobson is getting a new job.

United States President Barack Obama announced this week that he had nominated Jacobson to become America’s new Ambassador to Mexico.

Jacobson has led the talks since January, and has met with counterpart Josefina Vidal Ferreiro four times in that span.

Those talks have centered on the reestablishment of diplomatic ties and reopened embassies in Havana and Washington, respectively.

The US recently removed Cuba from its list of state sponsors of terrorism, paving the way for normalized ties.

While the timing is surprising, the move itself is not, as Jacobson’s area of specialty is actually Mexican affairs.
