This Tourist Destination in Cuba Just Had a Record Year

The Cuban tourism boom is everywhere — not just Havana. After Cuba reported significant growth in Cienfuegos, the country’s Ministry of Tourism is now reporting a record year in Jardines del Rey.

The destination, which first launched as a commercial tourist destination in 1993, received more than 400,000 visitors in 2015.

The increase in tourist arrivals is in part due to a demand increase from hikers, who are drawn to the islands of Cayo Coco and Cayo Guillermo.

The boom has also been the result of new hotel stock, including the new Villazul apartment hotel, and the launch of the Iberostar Playa Pilar property on Cayo Guillermo.

The latter property has 482 rooms across 15 buildings and bungalows.

This winter, 48 flights per week are scheduled to arrive in Jardines del Rey, mainly from Canada, the United Kingdom, Argentina, Portugal and Italy.
