Each year the University of Idaho Department of English hosts A Moveable Feast fundraising dinner in honor of Ernest Hemingway’s insatiable appetite for good food, good drink, and good company.
A local restaurant is chosen to cater the Feast each year for which the chef builds a unique menu inspired by Hemingway’s life and writing. Festivities begin with the Social Hour. Guests can mingle, talk about Hemingway, and enjoy a beverage and small bites before the Feast begins.
This year the UI Hemingway Festival’s A Moveable Feast: Havana Nights celebrates Hemingway’s Idaho-Cuba connection, the reinvigorated U.S.- Cuba relationship, and the writing of The Old Man and the Sea. Executive Chef Marshall Baltzall has created a unique six-course Cuban-inspired feast, featuring Vandal Brand Meats and showcasing the flavors of Cuba by combining the menus from two of Hemingway’s favorite Cuban restaurants—La Floridita and La Bodeguita del Medio. Fine table wine will be provided, and a no-host bar will be available to sample some of Hemingway’s favorite cocktails, including mojitos and daiquiris.
The Ballroom Dance Team at the University of Idaho will provide Cuban Salsa and Mambo dance lessons at the Social Hour from 5-6 p.m. and perform authentic Cuban dances at different intervals throughout the evening. Everyone attending the feast will have the opportunity to win Hemingwayesque door prizes, including a box of cigars Hemingway himself would have enjoyed, a gift card from Vandal Brand Meats, a Papa’s Pilar Rum Gift Basket, or a Flavors of Ernest Hemingway Gift Box .

The Cuba Journal is a Hemingway Festival media partner. We are offering a three-month, paid internship award. The intern will be expected to work eight to ten hours a week and will be paid $250 per month. The internship will begin shortly after the announcement of the winner in March.
Job duties will include:
- News gathering, fact checking and news design;
- Learning about the technical aspects of digital newspaper SEO, Google News indexing and web technologies for digital publishers;
- Practical aspects of attribution, copyright and fair use;
- Byline/attribution for selected articles published by the Cuba Journal
Students who are interested in applying for the internship must submit a 1,000-word article about Hemingway’s connection to Cuba along with their resume. The winner will be selected by Cuba Journal co-founder and editor-in-chief Simons Chase and Alex Britell, co-founder and publisher. The results will be announced during the Hemingway Festival at UI on March 3, 2016. Articles should be submitted to internshipaward@cubajournal.co. The deadline for submissions is Feb. 25, 2016.
