It was the largest pop concert in Havana in recent memory, with electronic dance music supergroup Major Lazer and Diplo rocking Havana’s Jose Marti Anti-Imperialist Plaform.
The concert, called “Peace is the Mission,” reportedly drew almost half a million people to the free concert in the center of Havana.
Major Lazer is a supergroup including Diplo, Jillionaire and Walshy Fire.
And while it was the first major performance of its kind since the 2014 US-Cuba rapprochement, it’s likely the first of a trend.
Indeed, the Rolling Stones announced that they would be playing a similar free concert in Cuba, scheduled for later this month.
“To the people and country of Cuba thank you,” Major Lazer wrote in a message on Facebook. “We have been humbled by your love.”
On the eve of the event, Diplo said the show would be “the most important show we have ever done.”
“Electronic music can seem ambiguous to people but here it feels like it’s gonna mean a lot to bring it to these kids because it belongs to them,” Diplo wrote.
The concert seemed to be a major hit in Cuba, with Cubans chiming in on social media to express their support and gratitude.
“Incredible concert yesterday in Havana with Major Lazer, thank you for giving us this unforgettable moment for many of us young Cubans,” one Cuban wrote on Facebook.
