The first photovoltaic solar park in the province of Sancti Spiritus has begun operations.
The 2.5-hectare park is located in the area known as La Sierpe Vieja, and contains 525 solar panel modules for peak Megawatt production.
According to engineer Jorge Armando Cepero, the project aims to raise the efficiency of electricity generation and distribution from renewable energy sources.
Chief Investment Officer of the company Misael Rodriguez stressed that the purpose of the project is to increase clean, daytime energy generation.
Rodriguez said that the amount of energy it will save is equivalent to that consumed monthly by 105 households, or one tonne of conventional fuel.
He added that its operation will reduce the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere by 646,000 tons, and that it will save the country approximately $35,000 per year.
Noting that solar panels are warranted for at least two decades, Rodriguez estimated that the project will recover the investment–valued at more than $700 million–several times over.
