The world-famous recording artist, Sting, has published an appeal to support a music-inspired effort to send a piano to Cuba.
According to a new release on Sting’s official website: Cuban culture and music has made an incredible impact on the world, and here’s an opportunity to ensure that impact will continue for years to come. Consider lending your support to this initiative to send a much-needed concert piano from London to the Conservatorio Amadeo Roldán music training school in Havana, Cuba.
The project was started by a professional London-based Cuban pianist who graduated from the School and was shocked by the worn out state of their only concert piano when she visited recently. Despite being one of the most prestigious musical schools on the island, with graduates who are famous throughout the world, it lacks basic resources.
Sting is asking people to support the cause by donating at GoFundMe.com/PianoToCuba and by sharing this link on your social media platforms.
If you are in London this weekend, a fundraising classical music concert will be held on Saturday 12 March at 7.30pm in St John on Bethnal Green Church.
Details and tickets are available at www.eventbrite.co.uk.
The music scene is heating up in Cuba in 2016. The overwhelming response to music events from Cuban youth offers a glimpse into what’s happening in real time as the music scene inserts itself into the narrative about Cuba’s new openness and provokes questions about what the future means for them.
Sting said in an interview, “Art thrives on limitation.”
