It’s not always easy to find an Hoyo de Monterrey double corona, like many of the most legendary Cuban cigars.
But when you find one of these massive smokes you must savor it.
Not that it’s particularly difficult – a 194mm by 49 ring gauge cigar is a serious pledging of time.
In the small world of large Cubans, the Hoyo is a titan, a favorite of cigar lovers and a necessary inclusion for any serious humidor.
So what’s it actually like?
This double corona has a chocolate brown wrapper, with an aroma of figs, black cherry, pepper, nutmeg, leather, cacao and spice.
The flavor is earthy with a very nice draw, a cigar that continues to evolve as you smoke it, with an aroma that is as complex and wonderful as any I have ever smoked.
It is an investment, this cigar, a prescription for several hours of tribute to the heavenly things that grow in Cuba’s western countryside.
